Melissa Shang is a 14 year old disability activist, author and Newton resident.  Born with a form of muscular dystrophy, Melissa got her start in activism when she launched a petition for a disabled American Girl doll.  The petition went viral and raised massive attention to disability representation in children’s toys.

Book cover of Mia Lee is Wheeling through Middle School that shows a drawing of a happy young girl sitting in a wheelchair. Stars and light glow all around her.

This New York Times featured middle grade novel stars a sixth grade stop motion filmmaker with a wheelchair and a lot of sass, trying to survive her new middle school.
