Feeling like every interaction with your child becomes a battle? Incentives and consequences losing their appeal and impact? Helping children with challenging behaviors begins with understanding why they struggle in the first place. Collaborative Problem Solving is an approach that recognizes that children with challenging behaviors are already trying hard. This means that children do well when they CAN, not just when they want to. They don’t lack the will to behave well, but rather they lack the skills necessary to behave well at times.

Parents, caregivers, and teachers can help children by adopting a compassionate mindset that that helps children build skills and relationships with the caring adults in their lives. Skills can be successfully introduced, practiced, and developed in our homes and classrooms when we utilize this approach!

In this talk, Dr. Ablon will discuss:
  • What do we mean by “challenging behavior”
  • What does research show about the causes of challenging behavior
  • How can we identify triggers to a child’s challenging behavior
  • How to build skills supporting flexibility, frustration tolerance and problem solving
  • How can we develop a game plan to handle problems before they happen
  • How do we develop lasting solutions to problem behaviors
