Student Advocacy Makes A Difference

This image is a letter written by a student to a City Councilor asking for upgrades to the local crosswalk.

Understanding Our Differences presented very well-received programming to students in the Newton after school program Service Stars. This was accomplished thanks to a generous grant we received from Newton’s Hauser Trust.

After a UOD presentation to students and their visit to a local crosswalk to observe accessibility issues, students wrote letters (see example) asking for change to City Councilor Maria Scibelli Greenberg. She then advocated with the City of Newton for funding to repair and upgrade the sidewalk. She also advocated with the state for $50,000 in added funding to help complete the project.

We learned in late September that this funding has been awarded, and the crosswalk will be upgraded in spring of 2025. After learning about accessibility from Understanding Our Differences, student advocacy made a real, tangible difference in the community!
